Hey everyone! For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Maddi Nordstrom and I’m very excited to be opening a monthly blog on soccerbuddies on goalkeeping. I’m 17 years old and I’ve been a goalkeeper since I was 12. I’m an active premier club player in my area and I am the captain of my high school soccer team. This past January I reached my dream of committing to Texas State University, a Division 1 school, to play soccer in the Fall of 2014. You can find me on Facebook at MaddKeeper1 to follow my day to day soccer life as well.
It took me a great deal of time to decide what I wanted to write about for my first Soccerbuddies blog. There’s so much to talk about! I figured I’d start at the beginning, about why I chose to be a goalkeeper. In later blogs I’ll be writing about my experiences in soccer, some tips on goalkeeping training and tactics, and my insight on the recruiting process.
It takes a particular person to opt to be a goalkeeper. To excel, extra training is required. Extra gear is essential. Extra drive. Extra passion. Extra leadership. Goalkeeping is all about excess, going beyond. There's extra pressure. One mistake can lose the game. However, one save can clinch the Championship. Goalkeepers have to attend additional training sessions to build a technical base, an unshakable mental strength and excellent athleticism. Goalkeepers must do everything a field player can do and more. This is why I wanted to play in goal. I wanted to be pushed to my limit. I wanted to be the best. I wanted to be the hardest working player on the field and I wanted the spotlight. I craved the pressure. I wanted to put the team on my back. A goalkeeper is the team's work horse...and often times the scapegoat. When you make a mistake, the world will come crashing down on you. But when you shine, when you excel, when you parry the ball from the upper ninety, that moment of pure adrenaline and pride will make all the "extras" worth it.
If any aspiring goalkeepers have any specific topics they’d like me to cover or any questions, please message me on my Facebook page, MaddKeeper1, or leave a comment below. Looking forward to starting a conversation with you!
