A big thanks to Katie P., who commented on our last soccer drills blog, for reminding me about this drill! It’s one of my favorites!
To do this drill, set up a small 1v1 field with two small goals on each end. Next, split your team evenly into two groups. To make it easier to imagine, let’s say you have two groups of eight. Assign a number to each player in both groups from 1-8. If you can, have one team wear pennies so it’s easier to tell who’s in which group. Then, have the two groups stand on either side of the coach. The coach will then feed a ball into the middle of the field and call out a number. The player from each group who has that number will sprint onto the field and play a 1v1! The round is over when a goal is scored or the ball goes out of bounds. The coach can mix it up a bit and call out multiple numbers sometimes to get 2v2’s and 3v3’s going, too!
Sometimes when we do this at the end of practice, my coach will be silly and call out all of our numbers for the last round!
